Unintentional Side Effects: How Weight Loss Drugs Are Fueling the Facial Fillers Market

Pharmaceutical Company Explores Opportunities in Cosmetic Injections Following Popularity of ‘Ozempic Face’ Trend

Galderma, a Swiss pharmaceutical giant, sees an opportunity in the “Ozempic face” phenomenon. The CEO of the company believes that the popularity of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic could potentially boost its facial fillers business. According to one cosmetic dermatologist, the Ozempic face is a result of aging and rapid weight loss which can lead to a sunken-in look in patients’ faces.

The company has started a study to evaluate the effects of their products on patients who are using GLP-1 treatments like Ozempic. Enrollment for the study is ongoing and results may be available by the end of the year. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, who coined the term, explains that the Ozempic face is a result of aging and rapid weight loss.

Galderma creates skin care treatments and has products like Sculptra that are designed to counteract the gaunt look associated with the Ozempic face. Last month, Galderma went public on the SIX Swiss Exchange and reported a surge in shares. The company also reported a 12.4% increase year-over-year in sales, reaching $1 billion in the first quarter. Galderma is capitalizing on this opportunity presented by the Ozempic face phenomenon to boost its facial fillers business.

Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, another cosmetic dermatologist who has seen patients with complaints of the Ozempic face almost daily due to widespread use of medications like Ozempic, agrees with Galderma’s assessment that there is potential for growth in this area.

According to Dr. Frank, “The Ozempic face phenomenon presents an opportunity for companies like Galderma to expand their product offerings beyond just weight loss drugs.” He adds that “With more people turning to medication as a way to lose weight quickly, there is likely going to be an increase in demand for anti-aging skin treatments.”

In conclusion, while some may view rapid weight loss as a quick fix for achieving their desired physique, it can have unintended consequences such as changes in facial appearance due to aging or other factors. As such, companies like Galderma are taking advantage of this trend by introducing new products designed specifically for this purpose.

As enrollment for Galderma’s study continues and results become available later this year, it will be interesting to see how well these new treatments work and whether they will catch on with consumers looking for ways to address signs of aging brought on by sudden weight loss.
