Revolutionary: The World’s First Molten Salt Energy Storage Facility Opens in Denmark

Breakthrough: The First Giant Molten Salt ‘Battery’ Unveiled

Denmark-based Hyme Energy has launched the world’s first molten hydroxide salt energy storage project called Molten Salt Storage (MOSS). The facility, located in Esbjerg, is designed to store excess renewable energy from sources such as wind and solar.

MOSS operates by storing excess electricity in molten hydroxide salt heated to high temperatures, allowing for the storage of enormous amounts of energy. This technology has the potential to decarbonize energy-intensive industries by providing a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels used for heat generation. By aligning with Denmark’s and global carbon reduction goals, MOSS offers a reliable reserve for when renewable electricity production is low.

The newly inaugurated facility will undergo rigorous testing before plans for commercialization in 2026 are implemented to scale the technology for the global energy market. Future commercial MOSS facilities could store green electricity at the gigawatt-hour scale, offering a sustainable and reliable reserve for power plants and heavy industries.
